With
the opening of Sol Pelícano hotel in the archipelago de
Los Canarreos that covers the Isle of Youth, started the winter
tourism season of the leisure industry in Cuba,
having in Cayo Largo del Sur one of the most important
destinations.
According
to what the secretary of the Executive Committee of the
Council of Ministers Carlos Lage Dávila said, even
though this year has been difficult for tourism worldwide, we
have kept trust and optimism in recovering, reason why we have
continued with the investment program we had started. In Cayo
Largo, he said, we can’t talk about recovery, but about a new
stage since facilities were so much affected by the hurricanes.
"Let’s say that is being born again because it is
consolidating as a destination with conditions very different
to the former ones in a previous time."
On
the other hand, Ministry of Tourism highlighted that this
season is expected to be much better that the one before, taking
into account the increase in the number of visitors since
November, meaning an average growth of 20 % comparing it
to last year and December 2000. This high season that will
conclude by the end of April is expected to bear outstanding
results in every market. "This year we will inaugurate 1
500 new capacities- said Ferradaz- and foreign investors
have kept interest and the country has continue to prepare the
country to develop even more this industry."
Concerning
why Cayo Largo was the destination chosen to officially open the
tourism season, he said: "If there is a single place to
deserve such honor that is precisely Cayo Largo, because
despite the harm caused by the hurricanes, they have worked very
hard to be able to show today’s results". For this year,
Cayo Largo will welcome one million 700 thousand visitors from
different markets.
During his stay at the Cayo, Lage and Ferradaz toured
the facilities, accompanied by Rogelio Acevedo, president
of the Cuban Institute of Civil Aeronautics, Roberto García
Díaz, first secretary of the Party in Isla de la Juventud and
representatives of the diplomat’s body accredited in Cuba
and foreign press.
