Among the programs to  preserve and protect natural resources in Cayo Largo del Sur, there is program of sea turtles. Between the months of April and September three different kinds of sea turtles reproduce : the Caguama, the Green and Carey (tortoiseshell). 

 

 The destination features a turtle breeding center located at  Marina. Among the preservation actions taken are the recollection of nests in the most vulnerable beaches which are ventually moved where the eggs are to be incubated, and once released the little turtles are put in their natural habitat.

At this tourist facility clients can appreciate and get to know the main characteristics of these species: their habitat, reproduction stages, migrations or feeding.

Pictures and filmings are totally free so that the visitor can take with him a graphic testimony and thus, promote  these animalsīs protection.

 
 

 

Cayo Largo del Sur is considered to be the most important place in Cuba when it comes to the reproduction of  green turtles (tortuga verde) and one of the most important also in the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico. Last year high level especialists at the Fishing Research Center, the National Division of Flora and Fauna and workers of Marina carried out a monitoring in which more than 800 nest of these species were registered, only half of the egg-laying season.

The map shows the main nesting places which practically covers the whole  beach littoral in  Cayo Largo del Sur. The picture, that was taken by clients participating in egg-watching and recollecting, corresponds to a green turtle in its egg-laying stage. For all this, Cayo Largo del Sur, is considered  to be the green turtleīs paradise of our country.
